NEWSLETTER 11 - OCTOBRE 2012

NEWSLETTER 11 - OCTOBER 2012

Everything’s for sale, including me.

When you choose art and dance as a lifestyle, you also choose to live on the margins of society. You look at the world through the body’s eyes. You give everything you have today, and live as if there is no tomorrow. You incarnate the cliché of the carefree, mad artist, unaffected by the pedestrian aspects of life. You live above it all, in a kind of snobbery. Too absorbed by your quest for an ideal of beauty, purity, grace or brutality, overly preoccupied by the parallel world you are inventing, investing, investigating. Too submerged in an unending flow of ideas; too busy shunning the ordinary.

You foolishly think that you own the world and live apart from it. However, this pretense doesn’t last long.

If you are a choreographer, you quickly begin to understand that your dearest desire can be transformed into just a marketable ornament. The very thing that you once snubbed comes back to haunt you. The dance that you spent days or years fine-tuning, polishing and refining becomes a marketable product. What had consumed you becomes consumable.

You become a street peddler. You wish to please, you hope to be bought. You find yourself thinking about the competition. You start targeting your public, discussing strategy and marketing. You lower your sights. You suffocate under the weight of your products. You are for sale. Your body, your ass, your ideas, absolutely everything; it’s all negotiable, all for sale. Take it all.

So, how can you resist it all?

Just back from Tanzmesse and with CINARS around the corner, I would like to salute all artists engaged in the same struggle with their integrity.

M.D.

THREE SEASONS AT USINE C

Alongside Marie Brassard, Nicolas Cantin and Benoît Lachambre, Mélanie Demers and her company are taking up a three-year creative residency at Usine C. Mayday is moving in to develop works, to enter into many collaborations and, above all, to occupy every nook and cranny of creative space at Usine C.

The choreographer will use the residency to refine and present a second iteration of Goodbye, a Festival TransAmériques coproduction that had its world premiere at FTA 2012. To be seen again and again at Usine C from March 20 to 22, 2013.

BLANK PAGE FOR 2 CHOREOGRAPHERS:
THE MONTREAL- MUNICH PROJECT

Conceived and intended as a “blank page for research,” this project will provide Katja Wachter and Mélanie Demers with three creative residencies: at Bassano del Grappa, Italy in the fall of 2012, at Tanztendenz in Munich in the spring of 2013, and in Montreal in the fall of 2013.

After a first meeting in Ipswich (GB) as part of a residency that was initiated by Les Repérages Danse à Lille and hosted by DanceEast in 2011, the first phase of the collaboration will take place at CSC Garage Nardini in Bassano. Mélanie Demers has been conducting research and creation projects in Italy since 2008 when she was first invited by presenter Roberto Casarotto to futher her investigations at the creative centre dedicated to contemporary art.

The choreographer, delighted to find herself up against the ironic and dreamlike language of German dancer and choreographer Katja Wachter, has said that this very promising collaboration will provide an opportunity to “develop and expand our respective signatures and share our practices.”

SHOWCASES IN 2012-2013

Mayday is investing considerable energy in strategy and integrity this season! After having enthusiastically accepted an invitation to perform at Tanzmesse in Dusseldorf at the end of the summer, our thrilling team of dancers will present an excerpt from Junkyard/Paradise as part of CINARS 2012 official selection in Montreal and then present the entire work at the Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique as part of OFF-CINARS.

Mayday will also participate in Parcours Danse, presenting an excerpt from Goodbye that has been specifically developed for a shared evening at Ahuntsic’s Maison de la culture on December 4, 2012.

For all these activities, Mayday is thrilled to count on the support of Suzie Larivée, who will help advance the career of Mélanie Demers and coordinate presentations of the company’s works.
